Geologist in Training/Junior Geologist

Summary

As part of the Geology Team, the Junior Geologist will be assisting with the geology exploration activities including drilling, core logging, sampling, prospecting, and geology interpretation. This position is located at the Ming Mine near Baie Verte and duties are normally performed in the core shack. The shift rotation will be a 14 days on 14 days off rotation, 12-hour day shift schedule. Travel throughout the site will be required for seasonal field and drilling activities.

Requirements

  • B.Sc. in Geology/Earth Sciences or Community college program completed in geo sciences &/or enrollment in B.Sc. – Geology/Earth Sciences program.
  • Previous geology and exploration experience will be an asset, ideally 1 year of experience, but not essential.
  • A good attitude, work ethic, and willingness to learn.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with other team members.
  • Ability to collaborate with other team members; liaise with other geologists.
  • Ability to build working relationships with others.
  • Ability to follow instructions and guidance from senior geology staff.

Key Accountabilities

  • Deliver concise and consistent geological observations, while capturing the following geological data, lithology, alteration, structural measurements, and geotechnical observations.
  • Ensure geological data is collected to specified standards and QA/QC protocol is followed and consistent.
  • Complete field visits to drill sites both on surface and underground to check drill site locations, ensure drill and exploration programs are conducted to the highest standards of safety / industry best practices.
  • Assist with exploration of drilling plans, and field mapping.
  • Collating and digitizing current and historical data for interpretation.
  • Core processing, including orientation, measurement, mark up, cutting, sampling and Geotechnical logging.
  • Core sample dispatch to labs &/or shipping vendor.
  • Prospecting, including mapping, soil, and rock chip sampling with the assistance of GPS to navigate and collect samples for geochemical analysis.
  • Provide support with other site activities as required.
  • Ensure adherence to FireFly Metals Safety policies and standard work procedures for risk identification, risk assessment and risk control.
  • Maintain a high level of Health, Safety and Environmental performance through effective work practices, communication with others and attending and participating in all scheduled health and safety meetings and attending and participating in all scheduled health and safety meetings and training.
  • Identification and reporting of health and safety risks, near misses, accidents, incidents, injuries. Ensure adherence to FireFly environmental policy, work standards, management plans and regulatory obligations and requirements.
